In 1985 was released by spanish label STI an obscure compilation tape of french artists, that I consider as a milestone in the history of french underground musics, and that was also the very first post on that blog : Le Défilé Des Épaves. Some of the artists appearing on that cassette are still active today, and many many more have appeared since then.
Thirty years later, I’ve decided to propose a new panorama of french underground musics, according to an inclusive definition : artists living in France whatever their nationality and french artists living abroad.
Here is the result : 91 tracks (including 81 previously unreleased), more than 9 hours of amazing music covering many sub-genres of post-industrial and experimental musics (ambient, bruitism, dark ambient, drone, electroacoustic, electronica, improvised, industrial, minimal synth, minimalism, modern classical, musique concrète, noise, post-folk, ritual, tribal, etc.). As it is a very masculine scene, I’ve done my best to invite as much women as possible : as a result, 13 artists/tracks include a female element.
Given their quality, I really think that many tracks here deserve to appear on a physical release. If a “real” label wants to organize a redux physical version of that compilation, please contact me or the artists.
The compilation comes with a 12p booklet with tracklist and informations about all tracks. It is included when you download the complete album ; if you prefer to download a few tracks only, see below to download the booklet separately.

Rien Ni Personne é o título da massiva compilação de electrónica francesa contemporânea que a editora Nostalgie de La Boue acaba de disponibilizar no Bandcamp. São mais de 9 horas de música, cerca de sete gigas se optarem por descarregar a compilação em formato WAV. Mas não é apenas pelo enorme fôlego que esta compilação impressiona, mas pela qualidade da música que reúne: nomes bem conhecidos dos circuitos da electrónica experimental ou minimal wave como In Aeternam Vale ou Pacific 231, para citar apenas um par de exemplos, marcam presença numa colecção onde estão representados variadíssimos géneros dentro do panorama electrónico francês mais subterrâneo.
Tristan Koreya, responsável pela Nostalgie de la Boue, escreve que a inspiração para esta compilação veio de uma cassete lançada em 1985 na editora espanhola STI e que propunha então ser uma representação da cena musical francesa da época. A abordagem de Tristan foi inclusiva: em Rien Ni Personne incluem-se trabalhos de artistas a residir em França, qualquer que seja a sua nacionalidade, e de artistas franceses a viverem no estrangeiro.
“E aqui está o resultado”, escreve Tristan: “mais de 9 horas de música incrível que cobre muitos sub-géneros de música experimental e pós-industrial (ambient, bruitism, dark ambient, drone, electroacoustic, electronica, improvised, industrial, minimal synth, minimalism, modern classical, musique concrète, noise, post-folk, ritual, tribal, etc). O curador afirma ainda ter tido o cuidado de contrabalançar o peso masculino desta cena convidando o máximo de artistas femininas.
A compilação é de facto impressionante, porque mantém um nível constante de qualidade e porque não faz consessões na hora de representar algumas das mais abrasivas e experimentais franjas da música electrónica francesa contemporânea. Obrigatória, certamente.

In 2016, Tristan Koreya released Rien Ni Personne [“Nothing and Nobody”]—A French Compilation on his Ivory Coast-based Nostalgia de la Boue label. It is intended to be a definitive survey of the French experimental underground scene—including, as he puts it, “artists living in France whatever their nationality and French artists living abroad.” The result, at 91 tracks and nine hours’ running time, is both overwhelming and glorious. Most of the music was recorded in the 2010s, though many of the performers, such as Bernard Hilpetti of Art & Technique and Axel, and Mitra Kyrou of Vox Populi!, have been recording since the ‘70s or ‘80s. In any case, the stylistic breadth is enormous. On one of the two tracks titled “Rien Ni Personne,” Nantes-based Airworld locks into a minimalist electronic groove: cool atmospheric menace, interspersed with angry clattering synth spikes. The Amor Fati Trio’s “Danse Sacrale,” by contrast, is improv free jazz for drums, guitar, and sax, which alternates between sparse, tenuous passages and blasts of broken funk. Enigmatic performer Internal Fusion, aka Éric Latteux, comes through with a dark keyboard dance track that sounds like it was beamed down from an extraterrestrial Renaissance Faire. The ambient New Age throb of Strangelucid morphs into the cold wave melancholy of Black Egg, which turns into the echoing ambient electro-acoustic noise art of Benjamin Aït-Ali, and follows on to Carroll Catcher’s beat poetry-mixed-with-Turkish-psychedelia. Most of the music on the comp is released here for the first time, so there’s plenty even for those well-versed in the French underground. And for new initiates, Rien Ni Personne is determined to introduce you to the entire scene, in all its dizzying depth and breadth.
