Latibula
Latin: latibulum (plural latibula)
Hiding place, refuge, den (of animals)
We’re very happy and proud to release Latibula, our very first compilation featuring the unique artists who create the amorphous abode of peculiar music that we are so passionate about. The selection presented here is a sneak peek of what’s to come from the label and also a look back onto our small but diverse catalogue. All the music is previously unreleased or from upcoming Marionette albums.
We decided to put together Latibula when it was evident that the current pandemic would disrupt our release plans for the year – delays in physical distribution and international postage are the norm and not the exception. This compilation is a small gesture towards our listeners, a reminder that music can unite people, and a place of comfort, a latibulum during difficult times.
The artists in order of the release are:
David Fenech & Klimperei – Tarzan En Tasmanie
A perky piece of jolly children’s voices and the duo’s unique style of chansonesque traditional music with a twist into the surreal, experimental, and naive. (David Fenech & Klimperei – Rainbow De Nuit LP is planned for early fall 2020)
Twinkle3 – Kalliope
The distinctive Pi Saw playing of Clive Bell floats over the otherworldly flora and fauna of electronic soundscapes conjured by modularsynth maestro Richard Scott and the rare strings and homebrew electronics of David Ross. (Twinkle3 – Minor Planets will be released next on Marionette this summer)
Giraffe – Lines Across the Still
The band takes our head above the clouds and away from the brooding saharan heat of their Desert Haze release, into cooler, more jazz and ambient filled territory – while the signature hand-drum hypnotism remains front and center.
Francesco Cavaliere & Tomoko Sauvage – 戴绿帽⼦ (dài lǜ màozi)
a man with a green hat
Cavaliere and Sauvage present a slice of their conceptual collaboration project, a calm and meditative blend of both worlds, the electroacoustic hydro-tones from Sauvage and the surreal electronic miniatures of „Weltenerschaffer“ Cavaliere. (Francesco Cavaliere & Tomoko Sauvage – Viridescens is planned for the end of the year)
Papiro – Serpentina
Pacing synthetic percussion surrounded by lively synth ornaments and a cosmic string machine reminiscent of the great electronic music composers of the past century, yet still very much uniquely Papiro. (Papiro will release his next LP this fall on Marionette)
MinaeMinae – Guis
A bouncy percussion-heavy track with a saturated balafon ostinato and a detuned shimmery organ. This sure sounds like an encore to his recently released Gestrüpp album, which incomprehensibly missed the cut the first time around.
Pierre Bastien, Steve Argüelles & Benoît Delbecq – 4hands 1breath
Spearheaded by Argüelles, the idea of these unconventional recordings was to create an improvisational atmosphere where the piano is not just sustaining or providing harmony and the trademark watery trumpet is not soloing. The combination evokes a murky film noir scene.
Soundwalk Collective – Black Night, Red Dawn
The Trio wandered the hallowed courtyards, corridors and classrooms of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (China), recording students practicing and rehearsing. Unexpected melodies are the result of impromptu, anarchic musical compositions of all instruments echoing each other in one acoustic space.
Kilchhofer – Kloen
The Swiss artist possibly made the first musical amalgamation of the Alps and the Highlands. Think appenzell garb with a kilt. Always on the search for the unheard yet familiar – Kilchhofer managed to create a mixture of tradition and synth experimentation with a sense of humour.
Julian Sartorius – Obacht
Obacht, a brutalist approach to percussion!
Sartorius often weaves ordinary objects into masterful grooves and wonky rhythms. Here, he ruggedly formed rattling percussion and thumping basstones to a banging wild beast. (An LP with Sartorius is planned for early 2021)
Max Loderbauer – Kleiner Hund
There’s no better title for this tender and heartwarming piece than ‘Little Dog’. The chamber music feel of Loderbauer’s composition brings about an almost pastoral appreciation of the beauty and wonders of life. Simply adorable!
All Proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières).
A heartfelt Thankyou! to all the artists involved and to the listeners
for lending an ear or two and an offering to aid those less fortunate.
